Hmmm. Did you actually solder the headers to the MP3 Player Shield? And do you have any other shields plugged into the Arduino? This error can happen from an intermittent connection, or from something else keeping the SPI bus from working.
If you’re still having problems I recommend contacting our Tech Support department; they can walk you through this and get you replacement hardware if something is defective.
